Lasik

Don't you just hate wearing glasses and contact lenses? I was wearing them for about 23 years and it was no fun!

As an active person, it is such a nuisance whenever my glasses slip down my nose when I sweat or my contact lenses come off when I wipe my face with a towel. Wearing glasses causes discomfort and pain at my nose bridge and at my ears. Wearing contact lenses causes eye irritation and dryness especially towards the end of the day. My eyes would periodically be infected by bacteria if the lenses are not adequately cleaned. I used to buy disinfectant for my contact lenses and that helped a bit. However, the lenses would soon feel rigid and uncomfortable towards the end of the monthly life-cycle. I could have opted for daily contact lenses for improved cleanliness but that's way too expensive.

I started talking to people about lasik and I received mixed opinions- some would say nay, some would say aye. Nay-sayers commented on the high cost and safety aspects of the procedure. Also, there is no guarantee that the power won't increase over time after the procedure. Aye-sayers swear by the comfort and freedom after the procedure. But they also warned about the slightly blur vision immediately after the procedure and eye dryness for the initial few months.

I visited websites of a few lasik centres to better understand the procedure and risks involved. There are a few key players to consider and their pricing is quite competitive. I've also asked former lasik patients to introduce their ophthalmologist to me.

I was keen but worried at the same time.

Enter FFB. We were enjoying our burger lunch in Bangsar Baru one afternoon and I popped the subject of lasik procedure.

"You should go see my friend. He does lasik and he previously fixed my ripped cornea. Here's his mobile number", FFB said.

After keying in the eye doctor's mobile number into my phone, I dropped him a sms to introduce myself. He replied saying I should visit his centre for a suitability check. But I needed to be off contact lenses for about a week. I was actually off contact lenses for over a month as the prolonged bad haze was irritating my eyes.

I called his centre to make an appointment. As soon as that's done, I read information on his website a few times to familiar myself with the procedure, risks etc.

Property of Mr Flabby Less

The initial check was pretty quick, about 20 minutes or so. The power of my eyes were recorded and the usual eye tests were performed. After that, they announced that I qualify to proceed with the procedure. The entire procedure was explained to me clearly- all 3 steps, which are painless (yay!). They didn't promise 100% result and offered a realistic 95% improvement in my vision post lasik procedure. What I should and shouldn't do after lasik were also highlighted. They kept reminding me to look at the red light during the procedure for better results. Mental note...red for red-light district! *chuckle*

I liked them as they didn't hard sell the procedure to me. They told me to go back and consider and return only when I'm ready to proceed with the procedure. I appreciated their professionalism. I would have ran away if they had given me the old sales pitch!

Naturally, I discussed this with Wifey when I got home. She advised me to consider carefully especially the risks involved. Yes, she agreed it was affordable at slightly over RM4,000 for both eyes but I needed to be aware of the side effects etc.

A few days later on a Thursday morning when we were spending time with our kids at the Farm in the City in Seri Kembangan (it was school holidays then), I declared to Wifey "I think I'll proceed with lasik. Since I'm on annual leave tomorrow (Friday), I could do it then. I know it's very last minute. Let me call them and see whether they have an available slot. If yes, then it's meant to be". I called the centre and there was a slot at 2.30pm on Friday for me! It was a sign and I greeted it with open arms! I'm so gonna be having 20/20 vision soon!

I was out the entire Friday morning with my family and it was another great day spending time with my kids. After lunch, we rushed home and I hurriedly showered, washed my face and shampooed my hair (as instructed before going for lasik). I arrived just 5 minutes before my scheduled appointment and they immediately prep my eyes. Eye drops were applied to dilate my eyes. Then I had to wear a blue head piece to cover my hair and a blue coat to cover my body. Just before I entered the operating room, anaesthetic drops were applied on my eyes.

The ophthalmologist was a picture of calm when I saw him. He guided me calmly with his clear voice. Once I'd settled in, he told me he would give me a heads up before he did anything. This way, I would be aware of his every action and less anxious of the procedure (not too sure about the latter!). He also reminded me to keep looking at the red light.

He started with my right eye. He affixed a gadget to hold back my eyelids. This prevented me from blinking. The next gadget sucked onto my cornea. It made a terribly irritating and painful grinding sound as it cut a thin layer of my cornea. My cornea was lifted back (think opening a window!) and my vision became blur at once. Antibiotics were applied. I was told to keep looking at the red light, which I did. He then started zapping the laser beam into my eye. I hated the burnt smell! My eyes were barbequed! More antibiotics were applied after that. Thereafter, he placed my cornea back into position by flipping it forward (think shutting a window!). There was no stitching involved. Immediate a plastic cover was placed over my eye and taped up. After about 30 seconds, he moved on to my left eye and the same process followed.

I remember half way through my second eye, I held my breath for awhile as I started getting distressed. The lack of vision and burnt smell finally got to me and I felt partially numb. I think at one point I was pressing my body hard against the table trying to distant myself from the laser beam (yeah I was chicken shit!)!

The entire process was over is a matter of minutes. I would say less than 10 minutes. There was absolutely no pain throughout the entire procedure. Only my mind and my heart were racing! It was simply nerve-wrecking!

After he had covered my left eye, I was led to a dark room. I spent the next 40 minutes or so there. My eyes were mostly closed during that time. I tried opening my eyes now and then to see things but my vision was still blur.

My ophthalmologist came into the dark room once I've adequately rested my eyes. He removed the plastic covers and put on my sunglasses for me. He reminded me not to wash my face or hair until the next day. He also assured me that my vision will improve over the next few hours. Finally, before I left, he advised me to diligently apply the prescribed eye-drops.

With a relieved heart, I walked downstairs and waited for Wifey to pick me up. I immediately noticed my improved vision as I looked around Mid Valley. That was just an hour or so after my lasik procedure! I was amazed by the result!

Property of Mr Flabby Less
I wore protective plastic eye covers before going to bed

That night, I had to sleep with protective plastic eye covers. There could be a risk of the cornea moving out of position if anything or anyone accidentally hit my eyes. Rubbing my eyes against the pillow when sleeping could also move the cornea. It was scary shit! I didn't sleep well that night.

In the next morning, my vision was much clearer. The improvement was remarkable! My vision was still slightly hazy but I didn't have to wear glasses or contact lenses to see anymore! I was able to drive myself back to the lasik centre for check up!

Post lasik, I had to periodically return to the lasik centre for check-ups. My vision was not very clear initially but it has improved after a few weeks. My vision is now clearer and sharper. My eyes get dry occasionally and I would just have to apply some eye-drops.

I'm so glad I was ballsy enough to proceed with lasik. I feel like a new person without having to wear glasses and contact lenses. The freedom is priceless!

Panerai Pam 116F with titanium case and tobacco base dial

Property of Mr Flabby Less
Panerai Pam116F with titanium/tobacco base dial

I've always wanted a nice watch but since the arrival of Sonny and Girlie, my priorities have changed and I've decided to put this interest on hold for the time being. Buying a luxury watch is not as important as meeting the needs of my kids, especially saving money for their education.

That was until I was introduced to a buddy of my buddy at our favourite wine place. Both of them are watch aficionados. I decided to make some enquiries in relation to Rolexes and Panerais, and almost instantly we started exchanging ideas and sharing information in relation to these and other watches.

We must have started off very well (perhaps the few bottles of Bordeaux red that we had helped too!) and the buddy of my buddy offered to sell me some of his watches. I jumped at the opportunity and started making more enquiries!

He made a very friendly and generous offer to me. As I was getting my first "proper" watch, he offered to sell me his rare Panerai Pam 116F at his previous purchase price. His watch was in excellent condition as he didn't wear it much (he had 49 watches in total!!!).

Panerai only made 300 pieces of this watch (F series) and this watch beared the number F02X/300. Pam 116F was the last batch of watches made by Panerai with titanium case and tobacco dial pieces. The numbers and markers on the dial are hand-painted and that makes this watch even more special as Panerai no longer produced hand-painted dials. These days the dials are "sandwiched". Its opened case back displays the beautiful and no longer produced "Panerai Stamped" movement. The first batch of this model called the E series, yielded only 1200 pieces. So in total, there are only 1,500 Pam 116s produced in the entire history of Officine Panerai.

This is such an excellent 1st watch for me and I'm thoroughly pleased! ;-)

Salvatore Ferragamo clutch bag

Property of Mr Flabby Less

I was feeling generous so I decided to get a clutch bag from Ferragamo for Wifey. Since we both like stuff from Ferragamo (yes, brand loyalty), it was easy to zoom straight in at the Ferragamo outlet at KLCC.

Wifey was previously looking at some clutch bags so being the good husband (and doting father too!) that I am, I decided to give her a surprise. This bag is made from snake skin if I remember correctly and the beige colour is quite versatile IMO. Also, it would be a good addition to Wifey's portfolio of bags as she didn't have similar colour or type.

This little gift is to recognise her many sacrifices to the family especially to the kids and for being a wonderful and loving wife. She thoroughly deserves to be pampered!

Top 5 muscles women love!

IMHO, most men workout at the gym to look good for one reason and one reason only...to attract the ladies! ;-)

So, which are the muscles that attract and turn women on the most?

#1. Abs
This is voted the sexiest body part and women just love washboard stomach. The ripples of the abs makes women wet (in the mouth and other areas too! LOL!)! Men should strive for six-pack and not a goody pack (yes, please go easy on alcohol especially beer!)! If you can't achieve rock-hard abs or six-pack, you should at least have a flat stomach.

#2. Hips and butt
Interestingly, women like narrow hips with a built butt. Apparently women like holding men's hips when having sex...(think love handles!) ;-P

#3. Biceps
Guns! Show me those guns! Women like the sight of big and well-defined biceps especially when men are in short sleeve tees or shirts. They feel the guns up there will awe them the same way as their gun down there! Also, big and well-defined biceps indicate that you're taking good care of your body. If you can take good care of your body, chances are you'll take good care of the ladies too.

#4. Chest
Perfectly square pectorals are part of the whole image women have conjured up in their fantasy-filled daydreams. While women can simply enhance their busts with push-ups and padded bras, we men have to work hard (and often for long hours) for ours (ouch!).

#5. Shoulders
Women love well-defined and broad shoulders because they signify masculinity. Also, a body with broad shoulders and a small waist gives the sexy "V" illusion, which immediately turns women on.

I'm genetically gifted in my legs and they are large, defined, strong and powerful without much training. Unfortunately, legs didn't make the list above :-(

Thank god I still have at least my guns to show off! ;-P

Manggis jantan (male mangosteen)

Property of Mr Flabby Less
Manggis jantan (male mangosteen)

We have an interesting mangosteen variant here in Malaysia. It's called manggis jantan (manggis = mangosteen, jantan = male, so combining them gives you male mangosteen!) due to its protruding end. Some even call it manggis Jepun (Jepun = Japan) as this variant is predominantly exported to Japan. It's absolutely delicious- tastes sweet, with firm flesh and has small seeds.

Since it's called male mangosteen (emphasis on the protruding end), eating it means you're having oral sex! Muahahaha! How gay for a guy! Muahahaha!

Jokes aside, you'll be surprised by the number of benefits this exotic fruit provides. This exotic fruit, used in traditional medicine for centuries, contains some of the most potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal compounds in nature.

Summary of key benefits of mangosteen is as provided below:-
  • Anti-aging - helps prevent aging
  • Anti-allergenic - helps prevent allergic reactions

Mountain musang king

It's durian season once again and this time around it's a bumper harvest so prices of durians have decreased significantly. That's great news and I can stuff my face with my favourite fruit without burning a hole in my wallet!

Just to show comparison, prices of musang king ranged between RM30-35 per kg in June this year but you can now get it for between RM8-14 per kg. What a steal! I can have almost 3 times the amount today compared to the previous season in June. Value for money? You betcha! I'm thoroughly pleased!

I recently met a new business associate through work and over lunch one day we exchanged stories about wine, food and travel. We then started talking about durians especially about how affordable musang king are this season and how much we enjoy the king of fruit.

"Have you tasted mountain musang king?"

"Mountain musang king? I'm not too sure but I highly doubt it."

"Although mountain musang king are produced and harvested here in the Malaysian highlands, they are not readily available to us Malaysian as they are exported to Singapore. They are of premium quality and have very intense flavours. The spikes of mountain musang king are larger than the ordinary musang king. Typically, the fruit is brown in colour."

"That sounds very interesting. I would love to try it one day."

"I'm getting a basket full (industrial-sized of course) sometime next week and I'll pass you some. Just to share, mountain musang king are sold for about RM30 per kg to the middlemen/exporters and once they are exported to Singapore, they're sold for about SGD30-40 per kg."

"That's madness! No wonder they are not sold here! Can't wait to try it!"

The following week, the long awaited call came in...

"The mountain musang king are here. I'll drop them off at your place later this afternoon."

"Great! Thanks!"

That night, Wifey and I had the mountain musang king at almost midnight after putting Sonny and Girlie to sleep.

So what's the verdict?

Great balls! This is the best ever durian I've had todate! Tiny seeds, very creamy flesh, strong durian aroma and extra bitter which bitterness lingers at the back of the mouth....all I've ever wanted in durian! A truly wonderful and fulfilling experience for me and Wifey that night (yeah, better than sex! guffaw!!!).

In case you are curious about the nutritional value of the king of fruit, please refer to my earlier post "Durian!!! My favourite!!! :-)".

Feel the heat, baby!

Those who know me well enough know that I absolutely love spicy food and spicing up my food. Personally, the spicier the better as I find the pain from the heat calming and satisfying (yeah weird, I know but it's a matter of preference I guess). Think of it this way, would you prefer a hot and sexy lady or a lukewarm plain Jane? Thank you and I appreciate your kind honesty! :-P (love my analogies! *chuckle*)

I'm now hooked on "cili padi" (bird's eye chilli) from Bangladesh, which I can easily get from a nearby store.

I'm lucky as the heat from chillies and spicy food has many health benefits. It's like having your cake and eat it...only better cos it promotes health and doesn't get you fat! :-)

Health benefits of eating chillies and/or spicy food are summarised below:-

1. Increases metabolic rate and has thermogenic effect
2. Lowers incidence of heart attack and stroke
3. Prevents cancer
4. Lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular system
5. Eases depression and stress
6. Lowers body temperature and has cooling effect
7. Improves digestion
8. Eases the discomfort of cold and flu
9. Improves breathing
10. Reduces joint inflammation and bone destruction

I enjoy a dose of "cili padi" at meal time as it improves the taste of my meal by giving me the extra "kick" (no offense to the cook ya, it's afterall a matter of habit and preference and nothing personal). The benefits provided above are pluses IMHO.

What are you waiting for? Quickly go get yourself a stash of "cili padi"! Time to feel the heat, baby!

Angry bird cupcakes

I'd initially wanted to make another batch of Mickey Mouse cupcakes for Sonny as it's rather easy to make but Sonny had other ideas...

"Sonny, would you like more Mickey Mouse cupcakes? Daddy is happy to make you some over the weekend."

"No. Please make angry bird cupcakes."

Gawd! How do I make angry bird cupcakes? What do I use for the angry bird features? How shall I design the cupcakes?

I'd so many questions and no answers so I'd to ponder creatively for a few days.

After some soul searching and discussion with Wifey, I've decided to give it a shot!

Mickey Mouse cupcakes

After my virgin attempt at baking (made Spiderman cupcakes not too long ago), I wanted to give it another try so I decided to make Mickey Mouse cupcakes for Sonny.

"Do you want Daddy to make more cupcakes for you?"

"Yes."

"Let's try something different. Do you want Mickey Mouse cupcakes?"

"Yes! Yahoo!"

Since my buddy FatBoyBakes is the God of Cakes, naturally I had to ask him for a tried and tested recipe.

He emailed me the recipe for vanilla cupcakes, "Nah..." :-)

VANILLA CUPCAKES- MAKES 12

Ingredients:-
1. 125g butter softened
2. 1/2 cup sugar
3. 3 eggs
4. 1 1/2 cups plain flour sifted with
5. 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
6. 1/4 cup milk
7. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/essence

Instructions:-
1. Cream butter and sugar with mixer.
2. Add eggs, one at a time.
3. Add half portion of flour and milk.
4. Repeat Step 3.
5. Add vanilla extract/essence.
6. Spoon about 2/3 cupcake cup.
7. Bake 160C (fan) for 15 minutes or until risen and cooked.

For icing, I decided to use a different recipe. Instead of buttercream icing as previously used for my Spiderman cupcakes, I've decided to use cream cheese icing.

CREAM CHEESE ICING

Ingredients:-
1. 250g cream cheese.
2. 60g butter softened.
3. 1 cup icing sugar.
4. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/essence.
5. 100g of melted chocolate.

Instructions:-
1. Beat cream cheese with mixer until smooth.
2. Add butter, icing sugar and vanilla extract/essence.
3. Beat together until mixture is light and creamy.
4. Remove about 1/3 of the mixture and and set aside the remaining 2/3.
5. Add melted chocolate into 1/3 of the mixture and beat with mixer until even.

IMHO, my Mickey Mouse cupcakes look a few hundred times better than my Spiderman cupcakes :-P Also, they taste great! The vanilla cupcakes were moist and tasty, and the cream cheese icing was creamy, fragrant and tastes just right/not too sweet (I don't have a sweet tooth and as such don't enjoy super sweet treats). Since I didn't use any food colouring, my Mickey Mouse cupcakes are definitely "healthier" than my  Spiderman cupcakes.

Hopefully this time around, FatBoyBakes approves of my attempt and I don't "fall with a loud thud from his pedestal" again :-P *chuckle*

Spiderman cupcakes

Sonny loves cupcakes, especially cupcakes with icing in the form of cartoon characters etc. His currently favourite characters are Angry Birds, Mickey Mouse, Spiderman and Lightning McQueen.

I declared to Wifey, "I wanna make Spiderman cupcakes for Sonny. I've checked out some videos on Youtube and it doesn't look all that difficult."

This lady made it look so easy...

"Sure. We'll just need to grab the necessary ingredients after breakfast and you can make Spiderman cupcakes for Sonny", Wifey supported.

At the baking shop, I bought the Chocolate Muffin Mix (it's my first time baking so I'm taking the easy way out), salted butter, vanilla essence, food colouring (red and black), icing sugar and muffin cups.

Property of Mr Flabby Less
All that's required is to mix this packet with 4 eggs, 130ml of water and 135ml of oil before putting it into muffin cups until 3/4 full and bake at 190C for 25 minutes. Simple!

I got home and quickly (I can be rather "kan cheong" at times!) got all ingredients and utensils ready for baking...

Lessons learnt:-
1. Don't buy muffin mixes. Make from scratch.
2. Fill the muffin cups half full.
3. Steady hands are required when decorating muffins.

It was fun baking and making these Spiderman cupcakes. Definitely plenty of room for improvement!
